Understand What the Ashes Do For Us After Ash Wednesday . . . Understand the Importance of the Ashes The Gospel today, for some, is confusing. The Lord says do not pray and do not fast so others may see. Do so in private and your Heavenly Father will see. Yet on Ash Wednesday, what do we do? We place ashes on our forehead, so that everyone can see. We appear to be doing exactly the opposite to what Our Lord instructs us to do. Are we disobeying Jesus on this day? The answer is no, as explained in today’s Homily. Today we gather to do something. We do more than just place ashes on our heads. The time of salvation is now. Not last week, now. What does that mean? Listen more within the Homily. Jesus tells us about how we can open our hearts. One’s heart can go south if we have a bad attitude. So, what does the Lord tell us? There is always a temptation to do things that gets us noticed … gets us celebrated. The Lord tells us be careful. Humans have an inner voice that often says . . . We place ashes on our foreheads to remind us that after today, we are still going to be doing something. We will be doing it . . . regardless of whether anyone else notices it or not.
