Understanding Life Backwards
from Echoes of Ryan Hosted by ΨOrigin Ryan MacLean
Season 2, Episode 53 Today This Scripture Is Fulfilled in Your Hearing examines how meaning becomes accessible through history. Beginning with Jeremiah’s unfinished vocation and Christ’s declaration at Nazareth, the paper develops the concept of retrospective recognition: later events can make earlier words, actions, and artifacts newly intelligible without changing the past or requiring backward causation. It connects this process to Incarnation, theosis, the Paraclete, formation, final causality, memory, AI, and historical preservation. At its center is a two-year longitudinal experiment in which conversations, actions, corrections, publications, and other artifacts were preserved before the theories explaining them were fully developed. Those records can now test the later theory against its own history. The resulting cycle is recursive: Word becomes action, action changes the receiver, history is preserved and retrieved, understanding deepens, and recognition becomes renewed action.
