understanding obligation and how it works

from Imperfect vision Hosted by David

When it comes to obligation: it can be a tricky thing because if you are not careful, obligation can and will lead to resistance which helps no one, least of all yourself. This doesn't mean that you you have to do the opposite. In this episode I talk about how obligation is created as well as how most if not all obligation comes from family and relationships, especially romantic relationships. This can create a lot of struggle between couples, and I think that it ultimately is one of the biggest causes of this in relationships period. I also talk about how family has a very important role in your development, and this, as well as other things, can increase or decrease mental health, and obligatory thoughts and actions. Ultimately though, when it comes ! obligations: it's not about removing or getting rid of them. This is because at times you really do want to help and to do all or part of these obligations, and so the problem is not the things themselves that you feel you must do, but the often all or nothing language that is used to make and keep such obligations, if only in your mind. My suggesttion that I talk about in this episode is to change them to fit your situation, mood and events going on in your life to avoid more resistance and resentment. Hosts Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods co-created the show that launched in 2017 while Earlonne was incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, where Nigel was a volunteer teaching photography. Since Earlonne’s release in 2018, the show has expanded to include stories from prisons across the state, including the California Institution for Women, as well as stories about getting out of prison and starting over, post-incarceration.From finding romance, to grappling with a life sentence, to trying to parent via 15-minute phone calls, Ear Hustle stories deliver what This American Life host Ira Glass calls a “"very real” and “untragic” take on prison life.
