UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF CRUPPERS & BREECHING - MEREDITH HODGES - LUCKY THREE RANCHFeeding - know what is nutritionally effective for your mules.Tack & Equipment - mohair - alpaca girths are ideal equipment.Keep your leather tack CLEAN to prevent rubbing and sores.Select a crupper made from English bridle leather so it will break under extreme pressure. Biothane and Nylon do not warm up with elasticity and flexibility like leather does.Proper adjustment of the cruppers & breeching. Weight & ability of the rider will affect the shift of the saddle. Crupper or Breeching? Cruppers stabilize the saddle better with human riders. Cruppers allow for better range of motion in the quine, especially in the hind legs for uphill climbing. Breeching can restrict the hind legs too much when ascending and put the equine off balance. Breeching can be used effectively with inanimate loads. Breeching has more straps and more risk of chafing than does a crupper.
