Unimproving Part 1: Original Sin - Roundtable
from Psychology to Live By · host Dr. Chris Stevens
In ‘Unimproving Part 1: Original Sin’ I suggest that self-improvement often confuses our essential worth, our being, with what we do. It plays on our real need for esteem and pits us against presentations of perfection and elite performance that create in us a continuous sense of not being good enough. In this Roundtable we discussed a range of implications: that unimproving is complex and not a quick fix; that work-life integration is largely about allowing people to be their authentic selves at work and is fostered by psychological safety’; that some self-help books really do help us to learn to be in the moment and to forget self; that self-concern often insinuates itself into growth and learning; and that ‘growth is really ‘ungrowth’ in that we are learning to relax and to be OK just being ourselves.
