Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern Merger Could Transform U.S. Rail and Boost American Exports

A proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern is moving steadily through the federal approval process and could reshape freight rail across the United States. Announced in July, the deal won shareholder approval by November and entered formal review in December when the companies submitted their application to the Surface Transportation Board (STB), the federal agency that will decide its fate.
