Unique Manuka Factor Honey Assoc. CEO: John Rawcliffe says Manuka is a Māori word
from Best of Business · host Newstalk ZB
New Zealand honey producers have lost an important legal case against Australia. Trying to secure a trademark for the term Manuka Honey. New Zealand producers were trying to stop Australian beekeepers from selling their manuka branded honey in Britain. But the UK Intellectual property office found there is no evidence the public believes manuka honey is exclusively from New Zealand. Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association CEO, John Rawcliffe told Heather du Plessis-Allan that this outcome came as a surprise. “We had a hearing and the result of the hearing was that manuka is a Māori word, that it is a badge of origin and it would be improper for anyone else to use it.” LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
