Unless the Lord Builds
from Cornerstonekaty
Psalm 127 Throughout these Songs of Ascents, we have followed the pilgrim’s journey toward Zion as a picture of the Christian life. That journey begins in repentance, as we turn from a world of lies to the home God is preparing for us. As we travel, he is preparing us for that home—teaching us to trust him, reshaping our desires, and loosening our grip on the things that cannot finally satisfy us. It is a journey of joy, though sometimes seeds of faithful living are sown in tears. These are profound truths that we sing about in worship and embrace on Sunday morning. But what happens when we leave worship and return to work on Monday? What happens when we look at our bills, read the headlines, or begin making plans for our family? It is possible to confess that our eternal future rests in God’s hands while living as though our daily future rests entirely in ours. Psalm 127 meets us there—with a house under construction, a watchman on duty, a worker losing sleep, and a household receiving children. God made us to work, to protect, and to nurture, but he never made us capable of giving ourselves the life and security that only he can provide. The Lord who brings us home is also the Lord on whom our homes depend. Because our homes depend on the Lord, we must trust him with our work, our worries, and our children.
