Unstoppable Overcomers EP# 93 Drew Deraney talking about men's vulnerability.

from Unstoppable Overcomers · host Dorothy O'Dell

Often life takes you places you never expect – or want -  to go. Life has certainly taken me to unchartered territory where, after contemplating caving in, I've chosen to crush it instead. Everybody goes through adversity, and each handles it differently. Men, for the most part, don't ask for help. We choose to be robust under adversity and ignore our emotions. Suppressing emotions and not getting proper support is unhealthy. Did you know that over 50% of our belief system is formed by age seven from who we are with and our environment? Additionally, 90% of our belief system is created by eighteen. To add insult to injury, the male frontal lobe (prefrontal cortex), the part of the brain responsible for judgment and decision-making, doesn't mature until we are 25-27 years of age. Men are built to make poor decisions at a young age. One poor decision we make is to say we are fine when we are not. Society reinforces this decision – "be a man, suck it up." Contrary to what we've been told, men must embrace emotional vulnerability while remaining firm. As the Chief Resilience Officer with Profit Compassion, I offer support services that encourage men to build trusting relationships so they can turn to each other in times of struggle. I've also assembled my tribe… 7 men who have endured much adversity and are stronger men for it and formed the Men Supporting Men Collaboration Tribe. We've curated a community of extraordinary human beings, assertive and empathic, successful men, who are here to listen, lend support, share, and guide. I graduated from Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT, with a BA in Psychology and an MA in Organizational Psychology. I received my MBA in Healthcare Administration from Baruch College (City University of New York), a joint program with Mount Sinai School of Medicine. I have spent my personal and professional life serving others. During my 24-year healthcare/hospital career, I guided clinical and supported caregivers toward better communication with patients and families and encouraged them to self-advocate while walking with them. I was one of the first in the industry to receive the Patient Experience Professional certification (CPXP) and studied to be a Communicating with Empathy trainer. I'm a lifelong connector who excels in bringing people together who can fulfill needs, and I have spent my personal and professional life serving others. I owned my expense reduction consulting business for three-plus years after enduring nine months of significant life adversity. Following a life-changing transformation of mental clarity and a strong sense of purpose, I'm dedicating my life to supporting others, especially men, to overcome adversity in healthy, empowering ways. As I mentioned, I've been through my share of adversity with limited support and guidance. Men need and don't have support systems readily available. They need somebody who has their back. Now they do. To connect with Drew: https://www.profitcompassion.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/drewderaney/  https://www.facebook.com/ProfitCompassion/
