Nam June Paik est né à Séoul, en Corée du Sud actuelle, mais a grandi et vécu au Japon, en Allemagne et enfin à New-York. Il est le pionnier de l'utilisation de nouveaux médias, dont la vidéo, en art. Pour cette œuvre, Paik modifie un parchemin japonais du XIXe siècle en y apposant l'empreinte de sa main et en installant une lampe rouge clignotante derrière. La juxtaposition d'une forme d'art traditionnelle et de technologie moderne deviendra la marque de l'œuvre de Paik.
