Update: Canonization of Blessed Acutis Postponed (The Patrick Madrid Show)

from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio

VATICAN CITY: The Vatican announced this morning that the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis, the first millennial to be declared a saint, has been officially postponed in the wake of Pope Francis’ death. The ceremony, originally scheduled for next Sunday in St. Peter’s Square, will be rescheduled for a later date.   The postponement is a natural and respectful consequence of the passing of the Holy Father. As the Church now enters a nine-day period of mourning (novemdiales), followed by funeral rites and preparations for the conclave to elect the next pope, all major celebratory events are temporarily paused.   The delay in no way reflects negatively on the cause of Carlo Acutis, a beloved figure whose life and witness continue to inspire Catholics around the world. Often called the “patron saint of the internet,” Acutis was a young Italian teenager known for his Eucharistic devotion, digital evangelization, and deep personal holiness before his death from leukemia at the age of 15.   For many pilgrims who had already planned trips to Rome for the canonization, the change will understandably cause disruption. However, it also presents a unique spiritual opportunity: to witness and participate in one of the Church’s most solemn and historic transitions... the death of a pope and the period leading to the election of his successor.   While unintended, this convergence of events reminds us of the mystery of the Church’s life: the joy of sainthood and the grief of loss, the continuity of leadership, and the enduring hope in Christ. The faithful now turn their prayers both to the repose of Pope Francis and to the future celebration of St. Carlo Acutis’ canonization.
