UPDATED COMMENTARY - Kimmel not to return to ABC4 with good reason-bad ratings
from KELY 1230AM/98.5 FM News and Commentary · host Wyatt Cox
Sinclair Broadcasting and Nexstar Media are not backing down on bringing Jimmy Kimmel back. They’ll pre-empt the show with their own programming. But here’s the truth. According to analysts, late-night TV hasn’t been profitable for years. Jed Rosenzweig at latenighter.com cites an analyst who told him CBS is losing between 25 to 40 million a year, and much the same is being said for both Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon. All late-night ratings have plummeted anywhere from 50 to 90 percent since 2014. Given the rising budgets for the late-night shows and falling audiences and advertising revenue, don’t expect Kimmel to get renewed. Jimmy Fallon isn’t safe either. His ratings are low low low. Reruns of prime time would be cheaper than the current late-night shows. How far Television has fallen since the era of Johnny Carson.
