Be simple. Making simple design choices - like monochromatic colour schemes and minimalistic decor - can help create a complementary look. Adding more variables, such as extra colours, creates more pieces you need to be able to pull together, and the more of a chance you'll have that they don't work together. Aim for cohesion. Whatever colour and decor scheme that you decide on, be sure to continue that throughout the building rather than having a sanctuary that looks completely different than your foyer and so on. You want your building to tell a single story, and for each room to look like it belongs to the whole.
