Yhdysvaltojen ulkopolitiikassa on käynnissä murros, jossa se arvioi läsnäolonsa laajuutta Euroopassa ja haluaa keskittää yhä suuremman määrän resurssejaan Tyynelle valtamerelle.Trumpin hallinnon poukkoileva ulkopolitiikka on haastanut Yhdysvaltojen liittolaisia. Vastauksena Euroopan maat lisäävät puolustusmenojaan ja ovat kehittäneet uusia koordinaatiomuotoja, joissa Ranska ja Iso-Britannia ovat ottaneet johtovastuuta. Samalla Yhdysvaltojen johto on kertonut olevansa yhä sitoutunut Natoon, ja arkinen työ liittokunnassa on jatkunut normaalisti.Epävarmuuden keskellä Naton kannatus Suomessa on laskenut. Valtaosa suomalaisista epäilee nyt Yhdysvaltojen Euroopalle antamia turvatakuita.
