Upside-Down Kingdom Pt. 3: Merciful and Pure in Heart - 6/23/2024

from The Naz Church Podcast · host The Naz Church

Pastor Dale Benson Matthew 5:7 (NLT) - This is not a verse about Karma. This is not a sort of "what goes around comes around." "The Universe always pays you back." These sentiments are not what this verse is articulating. - This verse is a pithy saying that points to a much larger teaching by Jesus. Matthew 18:21-35 (NLT) Matthew 6:14 (NLT) - God's mercy to us is undeserved. We do not show mercy to others because they deserve it. If they deserved it, it would not be mercy. You have been shown great mercy. God has made forgiveness available to you for everything you have ever done. I am afraid that at times we have taken some verses in the Bible and made them the be-all/end-all of a short, easy way to have all your sins forgiven and receive salvation. These verses do seem to say that God expects something out of us. For mercy and forgiveness from Him, He expects us to show mercy and forgiveness to others. I am not saying this is easy, I am saying it is expected. I am telling you that the One who has died for all your sins is asking you, in return, to demonstrate your understanding of the mercy that has been extended to you by extending that mercy to others. Matthew 5:8 (NLT) - There is a difference between purity of filth and purity of heart. - This is not talking about a clean, white heart that has not been stained by anything. Purity of heart in this context is talking about a heart that is wholly set on God. Purity of Heart is to will one thing. - Soren Kierkegaard Romans 12:1-2 (NLT) - Transformation can happen in an instant. It can happen over time. In this Romans passage is a "renewal." Not like renewing your membership at The YMCA or renewing your Netflix subscription. It is more like a cleansing or purifying type of transformation. CALL TO THE ALTAR - To Begin the process of forgiveness and showing mercy. - Who do you need to show mercy? Begin by committing to show that mercy to them. - To pursue a pure heart... To seek God first with everything in you. - Commit to non-conformation to this world - Commit to Transformation through the renewing of your mind.
