The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most well-known passages in all of Scripture, but it is also one of the most misread. Most people approach it looking for ethics, life principles, or moral instruction, but Matthew is making a far deeper theological argument before Jesus ever speaks a word. Every detail in Matthew 5:1-2 is intentional, from Jesus ascending the mountain to sitting down before He teaches, and each detail points to one foundational truth: Jesus is not a moral advisor. He is King. Before the Beatitudes, before the ethics, before any of the life-shaping instruction that follows, one question must be answered first. When Jesus speaks, have you already decided He is King?
