The Beatitudes in Matthew 5 are not a self-improvement checklist or an impossible standard. They are an announcement of good news describing what life looks like for people who belong to the kingdom of God. There is a beautiful progression in these verses that moves from surrender, to desire, to influence. God breaks us, God fills us, and then God sends us. Every Beatitude finds its fullest expression in Jesus Himself, and every Beatitude becomes possible because of Him working in us. This is not a call to become something foreign. It is an invitation to become what Jesus wants us to look like.
