Surgical site infections (SSI) are infections following a surgical procedure. They can be superficial or involve organs and implanted material. These infections are associated with prolonged hospitalization, readmissions, need for further surgery, and even death. Proper skin preparation can reduce the risk of developing an SSI. This presentation reviews why the skin prep is needed, how it is completed, and contamination risks. Simulation is used to demonstrate proper and improper skin preparation.
