Yesterday a Senate hearing that should have been about protecting Americans became a public attempt to humiliate Dr. Anthony Fauci, an 85-year-old scientist who spent more than 50 years serving the country. Senator Bernie Moreno screamed profanity at him, Rand Paul threatened repercussions, Josh Hawley mocked his constitutional rights, and Republican senators treated silence as guilt even though the hearing itself was designed to trap him. The cruelty was not separate from the larger story. While they tried to turn a public health hero into a criminal, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Trump administration have gutted the health agencies that are supposed to protect us, measles is surging, parasite cases are exploding, and even routine newborn care is being poisoned by misinformation.
