EPISODE 118 DETAILS USDA Offers Grant Dollars For New World Screwworm Innovations The USDA’s APHIS is offering up to $100 million for innovative solutions to stop the spread of New World Screwworm as it moves north through Mexico toward the U.S. The initiative, called the New World Screwworm Grand Challenge, aims to protect livestock, the food supply, and the economy. Grant applications are open until February 23. The pest, once eradicated from the U.S. and long contained south of Panama, resurfaced in southern Mexico in late 2024. In response to the growing threat, the U.S. border has been closed to livestock imports since May, halting more than 1.25 million head of cattle that entered in 2024.
