"Useless Ticks", Alpha Gal, and Disability Pride
The show has been on a hiatus the last couple of weeks because I’ve been dealing with some health issues mainly stemming from an Alpha Gal diagnosis and learning how to manage the symptoms and what triggers them. Since talking about the diagnosis with some individuals, one of the questions that comes up is: What purpose do ticks serve anyway? Aren’t they just parasites? That’s an important question, but also a dangerous one. Since it’s disability pride month, I thought I’d talk about what “useless” really means, what role ticks play in the environment, how this connects with Wild Spirit Storytelling, and what Alpha Gal has to do with it and with disability and our definition of it. We’re diving into the deep end. Put your favorite non-mammal seasonings on your popcorn and let’s get started.
