USS North Dakota: Pride on the Deep | Fargo News
from Fargo News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
In 2003, the Navy unveiled a new Virginia-class submarine built for global missions—and designed to be more affordable than its Seawolf predecessor. The project took root in North Dakota when construction began in 2007, and by 2008, it was officially named the USS North Dakota. Delivered ahead of schedule in 2014 after intense testing, the sub was commissioned that fall. Its striking crest—crafted with input from crew and locals—features a green ribbon honoring agriculture and universities, an arrowhead symbolizing Indigenous heritage, and the motto “Strength from the Soil, Reapers of the Deep.” Armed with Tomahawk missiles and crewed by 113 sailors, the USS North Dakota recently returned to active duty after major maintenance, standing as a proud emblem of naval power and state pride.
