Utah Valley University Shooting of Charlie Kirk Opens National Conversation on Political Violence

It was a heavy week, and we wanted to have this conversation as soon as possible and not too soon. The Charlie Kirk assassination, political violence, violence in America, and how that affects what we do daily with injury law and legal perspectives. The morning after September 11th was a heavy morning when the shooting at Utah Valley University was still fresh, and the conversation turned to both events.Kids came home on September 10 saying, “Turn on the news.” Everyone was watching and talking about it. Teenagers and college students discussed the assassination and its meaning in Utah. Governor Cox made comments about not wanting the alleged shooter to be from Utah, and that was perceived in many different ways.The first appearance with the not guilty plea. He was pictured in a suicide smock, which is part of suicide watch, and put in a suicide prevention cell, and a prior jail suicide case that went to the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Students laid flowers at the memorial, and some are dropping out of Utah Valley University. Inquiries came into the office from people who were there and are not doing well, asking if they have any legal recourse.Governmental immunity in Utah, and the cap on damages is $3.3 million for the entire incident. In the wake of events like the Charlotte train attack, this shooting, and attacks on other larger events, why haven’t metal detectors, more staff, and key card access been implemented? Is it a buget issue?Charlie Kirk's assassination will be remembered like Pearl Harbor, September 11th, Martin Luther King, Robert Kennedy, JFK, Reagan, Gabby Giffords, and is a reminder of why violence has no place.
