UW System puts money over morals, student activists say

from WORT 89.9FM Madison · host WORT 89.9FM Madison

More than two-thirds of UW-Madison’s student government backed a resolution last Wednesday, calling on the UW System and its flagship university to disclose their financial dealings and cease investments that are “complicit in apartheid and genocide.” The resolution specifically names the Israeli occupation and military operations in Sudan, arguing that related investments violate a state statute that prohibits UW from buying into a company that practices or condones discrimination. UW-Madison responded to the vote just hours later, writing in a statement that the students’ demands are flawed, unrelated, and illegal. Adam Donahue, a member of UW-Madison’s Students for Justice in Palestine, co-authored the resolution. He tells our News Producer Faye Parks the university is misleading the public – and protecting its bottom line. Image courtesy: Faye Parks / WORT News.
