These stories often feature demonic beings and bloodthirsty spirits that served as precursors to the modern vampire. The specific folklore and characteristics of the vampire that we recognize today emerged primarily from the verbal traditions of Southeastern Europe in the early 18th century, particularly in Transylvania, Romania.
