Vandor Hill of Whack Donuts (S4E44P2)

from Storied: San Francisco · host Jeff Hunt

In this podcast, Vandor picks up where he left off in Part 1. He traces his family history back to his grandfather, who moved from Mobile, Alabama, to San Francisco around the time of the Second Migration and met his wife (Vandor's grandma) here in The City. She was born and raised here; he was a quiet, strong man who learned how to dress from his new wife. When he was two, Vandor's dad left the family. But he was surrounded by relatives and loved ones, most of them living in the same Victorian in Lower Pac Heights, on the lip of the Fillmore. Because his mom was young when she had Vandor, her own parents took over raising the boy. Family gatherings in the house were common, and there was always a lot to eat. Vandor talks about those meals as well as some of the neighborhood spots they'd get their produce and meat from. They're places that aren't around anymore, but the owners were often friends of the family. We turn to Vandor's teen years. He got into art, graffiti, and break-dancing in those days. He describes the contrast once he transferred from a private high school to Galileo, for him both socially and academically. In his junior year, his sister was born, his parents were fighting, and he relocated to the East Bay because his mom and his grandma were on bad terms. He began to struggle in his schoolwork. He was working at the Exploratorium. The next year, his senior year in high school, he was told he was one credit short of what was needed to graduate. He had befriended a photographer who also worked at the Exploratorium. They were set to attend and work at an event together, but Vandor got lost and missed it. It didn't matter, though. His friend had committed suicide. Shortly after that, the family found out they were losing their house in Pac Heights over a family quarrel. Despite all this, Vandor graduated high school. We end this episode with Vandor's thoughts on what it means to still be here in San Francisco. Follow Whack Donuts on Instagram. The Art of Arms l’Arte Dell Armi At the Art of Arms we have one solitary vision, to bring the historical martial arts we study as HEMA or WMA practitioners to life by telling the stories of those who lived it. The hours of research, writing, transcription and translation are worth it when we get to see Altoni’s Spiedo section in action at the Baglioni Palazzo, Fiore’s armor techniques displayed on the battlefields of San Giovanni in Persiceto, Liectenauer’s rossfechten techniques thundering across the terrain of southern Germany, the Anonimo’s sword and gauntlet brought to bear in the lists of Mantua; these are the moments where history and martial arts meet, and we’re dedicated to bringing these moments to you our dear listeners. We hope you enjoy! Via Nova [San Marino Remix] DJ High Yona Original song and performance One Riot, One Ranger Dead Reckoning Band A hard-driving anthem forged in Texas dust and defiance. One Riot, One Ranger channels the spirit of lone authority standing against chaos, where one man draws the line and the world answers. Gritty guitars, pounding drums, and a relentless rhythm carry a story of law, legend, and reckoning. From the echoes of the Texas Rangers to the fire of San Jacinto, this track blends history with modern rebellion. It’s not polished country, it’s raw, unapologetic, Southern-fueled rock with attitude. The kind of song that hits like a warning shot and doesn’t ask permission. This is Rebel Blackbeard Rock, built for those who don’t wait for backup. 2015–16 Season Preview San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley's introduction to the 2015–16 Season at San Francisco Opera.
