Varangian Way

In this episode, we follow the Varangian Way, the medieval river-and-portage trade route that connected Scandinavia with the Byzantine Empire through the lands of Kyivan Rus’. The episode explores how Norse Varangian merchants traveled dangerous waterways, including river rapids, to exchange northern goods such as furs, wax, and honey for Byzantine luxuries, coins, and jewelry. Drawing on sources like the Tale of Bygone Years and De Administrando Imperio, we look at the route’s economic importance and its role in shaping early Rus’ society. We also examine the “Varangian problem,” the debate over Scandinavian and Slavic roles in the formation of the first Rus’ state, showing how modern archaeology points to a complex, polyethnic world built through trade, migration, and cultural exchange along the Varangian Way.
