Vayakhel - the people don’t stop donating!

Parashat Vayakhel describes how Moshe gathers the Israelites and instructs them about the importance of observing Shabbat before relaying God’s commands regarding the construction of the Mishkan (Tabernacle). The people respond with an overwhelming outpouring of generosity. Men and women, rich and poor alike, bring gold, silver, fabrics, precious stones, and other materials for the sacred work. Skilled artisans, led by Betzalel and Oholiav, dedicate their talents to crafting the Mishkan and its holy vessels.The generosity of the Israelites is so immense that Moshe is soon informed: there is too much! The donations surpass what is needed, and Moshe gives a remarkable order—he tells the people to stop giving. This moment highlights the deep devotion of Bnei Yisrael to the Mishkan, showing their desire to contribute not just with materials but with their hearts and souls.Beyond its focus on donations, Vayakhel teaches a powerful lesson about the balance between spiritual ambition and restraint.
