Two goats stand at the center—one offered to God, one sent to the wilderness bearing Israel’s sins—while the people “afflict” themselves and cease work in a Shabbat Shabbaton. Laws then guard the sanctity of blood and demand that offerings be brought only to the Tent. Chapter 18 sets sexual boundaries and bans idolatrous practices like Molech, warning that defilement can cause the land to “vomit out” its inhabitants. Themes to listen for: access with awe, atonement that renews the whole system, life revered in the blood, and covenant boundaries that protect community.
