VC10X - How to start an Angel Syndicate? w/ Jed Ng, Founder Angel School
from VC10X - Investing, Venture Capital, Asset Management, Private Equity, Family Office · host Prashant Choubey
Jed started Angel investing 5 years ago. He got his first exit in year 2, and his first unicorn 2 years after that. He saw syndicates as a way to scale capital, diversify risk, and earn more upside through carried interest. He learned that it's really HARD to build a syndicate from 0 for three reasons: 01 No best practices: Building syndicates isn’t a structured discipline today. Google “how to start an angel syndicate” and you’ll get piecemeal answers about creating a syndicate on AngelList or how syndicates work. There’s simply no single end-to-end view of the process. 02 Broad skillsets required: Building a successful syndicate is like running startup. You’ll be convincing LPs to look at your dealflow (BizDev), performing due diligence (Being a VC), sharing deals with your LPs (marketing) and closing capital (Sales). It takes all these skillsets at the right amounts at the right time. 03 The chicken-and-egg problem: Functioning syndicates require both LPs and dealflow at the same time. There’s a ‘cold start’ problem in having to solve both sides of the equation at once. Angel School helps you overcome all these obstacles to start your own Angel Syndicate. In this episode, we talk about: 1. What is an Angel Syndicate? 2. How's it different from a Venture Fund? 3. Why starting an Angel Syndicate is a good idea? 4.
