Bellini, who is an Italian transplant surgeon working in Belfast. Over an international phone line she speaks about the obstacles women face during their developing career which leads to inequity within the medical profession*. Amongst others, she speaks about ‘unconsious bias', a ‘glass ceiling’ and ‘the imposter syndrome’. What is important to know as a young female healthcare professional who aspires to be a surgeon? The goal of this podcast is to promote the female surgeon by shining a light on her, because as dr. Bellini says: ‘You can be what you can see’. Or in our case, what you can hear;). Amongst the medical specialists, the ratio leans more towards men (around 55%). For the surgical specialties however this disparity is much greater. For every female general surgeon there are three males; for cardio-thoracic surgery this number goes up to eight! For healthcare leadership positions these numbers are comparable. [Source: CBS.
