Venerable Macarius of Optina: A Life of Humble Obedience and Spiritual Wisdom

Today we remember Venerable Macarius of Optina, a monk who dedicated his life to prayer, spiritual guidance, and the study of the holy Fathers. Born Michael Ivanov in 1788, he left a promising secular career to embrace the monastic life, eventually becoming a revered Elder at Optina Monastery. Father Macarius was known for his humility, obedience, and deep love for the spiritual welfare of others. He played a key role in publishing important ascetical writings and served as a spiritual father to many until his peaceful repose in 1860.Support the show
