Venyu Podcast – Podcast Show Notes Episode 004 William Sellers, Matt Wallace, Scott Thompson Welcome: Welcome to the Venyu Solutions Audio Podcast for July 8th, 2010. This is podcast number 004. Introductions: Host William Sellers, Co-Host Matt Wallace, and our fearless leader and CEO, Scott Thompson – Welcome Scott Housekeeping Items: Website = http://www.venyu.com Twitter = @venyu and @venyucares Blog = http://blog.venyu.com DR Seminar next week July 15th with Dell and Veeam – http://www.venyu.com/DRseminar Today’s Topic is Security in the Cloud – an article came out this week on Network World discussing the rising concern among IT managers about how secure cloud computing is – you can find a link on our twitter feed. There are a couple issues IT managers have identified that seem to be prevalent: SLA???, location of their data, and of course security of data in the cloud environment. Scott, we’ve discussed these issues at length internally – and this is certainly near and dear to you… let’s jump in… M to S: First of all, what is your definition of cloud computing? M to W: Will, you’ve been involved with VMware and virtualization since it began – what are the differences if any between cloud and virtualization or managed hosting? Cloud = Multiple Virtualization clusters--- possibly spread over geographic locations Virtualization = Multiple Operating Systems/services running on single pieces of hardware(s) Managed Hosting = Venyu fully manages an OS or Service (email, db, www, etc) M to S: When asked about their Cloud infrastructure – specifically the location of the data – Google often deflects or dodges the question and it has raised flags understandably for their customers. People want to know where their data is – some pundits believe that’s old-school thinking. Why?! M to S: Let’s talk SLA real quick – a couple unnamed cloud providers’ SLA’s could be classified as best effort. What’s your take and on that and what should people watch out for. SPEAKER NOTES: the IT industry’s attitude towards Cloud computing is that it’ll always be on because you’re sharing the computing power of this nebulous cloud… http://www.networkworld.com/news/2010/070610-cloud-computing-secrecy.html M to W/S: Gartner Research says more and more companies are moving production into the (nebulous) cloud. Is that really happening? M to S/W: How concerned should people be about the security of their cloud servers and cloud data? M to W: We don’t use the term cloud computing around Venyu much – our virtual server platform is a private cloud correct? Give our listeners a brief rundown of what it is and could do for them M – mention DR seminar on July 15th and wrap up www.venyu.com/DRseminar
