Vera Chapter XXI

In which Mr. Wemyss, left alone in the echoing drawing-room, reflects with a mixture of irritation and longing on the neglected piano and the dwindling social gatherings once held there, his mood darkened by domestic tensions. He scrutinises the parlourmaid over a missing button, a trivial sign of disorder that nonetheless stirs deeper resentments, while thoughts of his wife’s sulking and their strained relationship fill the house with a heavy, unspoken sorrow.
