I think as dog owners we give affection to our dog without even realizing we are doing it.  And when this happens we aren't aware that the affection we are giving to our dogs is nurturing their current state of mind.  I don't think our dogs "turn off" as they are always aware of their surroundings.  Here is my take on what affection means to your dog.    Courtesy 93.9 WLVB
