Vermont Farmers Rise Together | Montpelier News

Vermont’s farmers are fighting for survival—and the Intervale Center is their unlikely hero. For 35 years, this Burlington hub has been a hands-on lifeline, helping nearly 1,000 farms navigate everything from startup hurdles to climate chaos. Executive Director Travis Marcotte, who’s led the charge for 15 years, shows how tailored support can turn small wins into big breaks: Kevin Melman’s mushroom biz got a shot at UVM after Intervale smoothed out insurance and paperwork; Hilary Martin slashed startup costs by sharing land and gear at Diggers’ Mirth Collective. But with rising costs, unpredictable weather, and big corporate walls, Vermont’s growers are constantly adapting—rolling with punches, chasing new customers, and proving that resilience grows right where the dirt meets determination.
