Vermont’s Maternity Care Crisis | Montpelier News

Vermont’s rural communities are sliding toward maternity care deserts as birthing centers shutter across the state, forcing mothers to travel hours for essential services. Springfield and Copley have already closed, Brattleboro narrowly stayed open thanks to state grants, while Lamoille and Windsor counties face looming crises. A 2024 state report proposes regionalizing care to cut costs—but ignores critical gaps in emergency transfers and hospital readiness. Freestanding birthing centers, meant to fill the void, lack emergency equipment and rely on nearby hospitals that may not be prepared. For families, every extra mile could mean life or death—especially for marginalized groups already stretched thin. Maternity care demands safety and accessibility everywhere, not just where it’s convenient. Vermont needs a bold, statewide plan before another center closes for good.
