Stefan is led through the castle’s hidden chambers, meeting the baron’s three brothers: a philosopher poring over ancient texts, a chemist bending nature to his will, and finally the baron himself as the great astronomer. From the heights of the turret, Stefan marvels at wondrous sights—a halo around his shadow, a congregation of snow-carved figures, and a comet that looks like an angel in the sky. But each time his imagination soars, the baron dismisses it coldly with science, commerce, and pride. When the boy dares to hope his father might look through the magnificent telescope, the baron’s anger flares—and Stefan realizes the brothers’ pursuit of knowledge may hide something far darker.
