Has anyone ever told you that you weren’t good enough?  I asked a former colleague this question many years ago and she told me that her guidance counselor in high school suggested that she should forget about college and go to vocational school instead.  Thank goodness she didn’t take his advice.  Not only did she go to college and vet school, she completed a PhD in pathology and later became board certified in another specialty.  My colleague had gumption! One of the traits that I admire most is gumption.  Gumption is what makes you ignore those that say you can’t do something when you know in your heart that you can.  Gumption makes us strive harder and push forward when we are faced with challenges.  In this issue we introduce you to another friend of mine who has a lot of gumption, Dr. Lillie Davis.  Growing up in poverty, she was often told that she wasn’t good enough.
