VFTB 201: DMT – The Soul of Prophecy?

from A View from the Bunker · host Derek & Sharon Gilbert

DURING RESEARCH into the effects of the psychedelic drug DMT in the early and mid '90s, Dr. Rick Strassman made a startling discovery: The experiences of the volunteers in his studies bore many similarities to the experiences of the Hebrew prophets.About his new book, DMT and the Soul of Prophecy: A New Science of Spiritual Revelation in the Hebrew Bible, Dr. Strassman writes:I tackle the major unresolved issue with which I was left after finishing my DMT project nearly 20 years ago. This was to find a model that fit the data from our volunteers’ reports of the drug state. This ultimately led me to the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) where the notion of a "prophetic state of consciousness" began taking shape. At the same time, in order to make sense of the Hebrew Bible, I turned to the classic medieval Jewish philosophers like Maimonides, who proposed rather sophisticated metaphysical/spiritual mechanisms for the prophetic experience.Sadly, because of some nagging health issues, I was not able to speak with Dr. Strassman about the new book. In lieu of what would have been a fascinating discussion, we present the interview we conducted four years ago about his previous book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, and I conclude by summarizing Dr. Strassman's five major findings and adding my own conclusions about the wisdom of seeking contact with the spirit realm without the aid (or consent–see Deuteronomy 18:9-11) of Yahweh. Please join Derek and Sharon Gilbert Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM Central Time (GMT -5) for the Gilbert House Fellowship. Our plan is to study through the Bible in a live webcast every Sunday morning.
