In coincidenza del 20esimo anniversario dell’attacco alle torri gemelle, gli Stati Uniti d’America ritireranno le truppe dall’Afghanistan. Così ha annunciato il presidente Joe Biden, mettendo fine al ventennale conflitto militare, il più lungo nella storia degli Stati Uniti. Tutto cominciò il 7 ottobre 2001 con l’invasione del territorio controllato dai talebani da parte dei gruppi afghani loro ostili dell’Alleanza del Nord, con il supporto tattico, aereo e logistico di USA e NATO. Nella seconda fase, dopo la conquista di Kabul, le truppe occidentali, con statunitensi e britannici in testa, incrementarono la loro presenza anche a livello territoriale per sostenere il nuovo governo afghano nell’Operazione Enduring Freedom. L’Amministrazione Bush giustificò l’invasione dell’Afghanistan, nell’ambito della guerra al terrorismo, seguita agli attentati dell’11 settembre 2001, con lo scopo di distruggere al-Qāʿida e di catturare o uccidere Osama bin Laden, negando all’organizzazione terroristica la possibilità di circolare liberamente all’interno dell’Afghanistan.L’Ambasciatore Alessandro Minuto Rizzo, Presidente della Nato Defense College Foundation, ha ricoperto dal 2001 al 2007, la carica di vicesegretario generale della Nato. In virtù di tale mandato ha conosciuto da vicino la difficile realtà dell’Afghanistan, presiedendo il Consiglio dell’Alleanza Atlantica in alcune missioni ufficiali nel paese.
