Victor Licata: The Marihuana Maniac - Episode 32

from Middle-Aged and Mediocre · host Middle-Aged and Mediocre

22-year-old Victor Licata murdered his family with an axe on October 13, 1933 in Tampa, Florida. Victor was a mentally-ill young man with a well-documented past but it didn't take long for his story to become the driving force behind anti-marijuana campaigns, even influencing new laws. This is a story of a tragic and horrific crime, the media's ability to create a narrative and sensationalize a story, and how lawmakers in government can ignore real problems staring them straight in the face while they twist and manipulate the facts to maintain a status quo.  Cash and Joel examine this story and discuss the history of marijuana in the United States of America. This episode also features the first ever listener-submitted story (thanks, Noah!) and a new segment called "Joel's Feel Goods" where Joel reads a couple of heartwarming stories to leave us all feeling just a little bit better about life.
