Victoria's little penguins receive world-first bird flu vaccine

More than 5,000 little penguins in Victoria are receiving their first of two bird flu vaccinations in a world-first effort to protect the state's famous colonies at Phillip Island and St Kilda. The vaccination program comes after the detection of an infected penguin death, with conservation groups expressing concerns about potential risks to the broader population. The vaccine has been trialled on little penguins and shown to produce an immune response without negative health impacts, though authorities acknowledge this unprecedented wild bird vaccination program involves significant complexities and challenges.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
