The winds of change swept through the north. Once, the Vikings had dominated land and sea. Now, their world was shifting. Kings like Olaf of Norway and Cnut of Denmark and England seized power, uniting lands once ruled by independent chieftains. With each new law, each new royal decree, the old assemblies—the "things"—lost their independence. Viking society, once defined by freedom and kinship, was now shaped by the will of the king. Stone churches and royal halls appeared across the land, symbols of a new authority. But this new order brought strife. Succession crises erupted. Rival nobles fought for the throne.
