Vikki's Story

Vikki, 25, from Kingston upon Hull West and Haltemprice wanted to become a teacher in Yorkshire and The Humber. She had the qualifications and the passion, but the Department for Education had slashed teacher training bursaries for subjects facing critical shortages across the region. Treasury spending rules force departments to compete for fixed pots, as though the government that creates the pound must first find it somewhere else. The classrooms were ready, graduates were eager to teach, but Westminster chose not to connect them. This is her story of how central government spending caps block people from filling roles their communities desperately need. Blocked Britain is produced independently.
