Village: It Takes A Good One To Raise A Child

“It takes a Village to raise a child”. Derived from many African cultures, a proverb expressing the collective responsibility of the village to protect, educate and support each other for the greater good of the child; a blessing. If you know how our family structures have been disrupted for the benefits/profits/gains of others then you also know the impact it has on our societies, by design. Children need healthy interactions with other members of a community to help in cultivating reciprocity within. We know that there are pros and cons to everything, but how do we begin to take the old and make it new? Were you part of a larger family network of whom most could rear you? Or, did your parents say, “I wish another mother sucka would put their hands on my child”?  What parts do we keep and what parts do we throw away from our upbringing? Let’s have this discussion.
