"Conspiracy theories" are attempts to explain the ultimate causes of significant social and political events and circumstances with claims of secret plots by two or more powerful actors… While often thought of as addressing governments, conspiracy theories could accuse any group perceived as powerful and malevolent.

Politics presents circumstances similar to other social conflicts: There are "winners" and "losers" in highly competitive situations, one group (usually a party) is more powerful than others, and the stakes of the conflict are real.

…[E]specially when those events stimulate the psychological states linked to conspiracy beliefs, such as low political trust, feelings of powerlessness, uncertainty, and unpredictability.
