In elementary school, we are taught that the first settlers came from England on a ship called the Mayflower, and that they were Puritans who founded the first colony in New England. While it's true that a group of English Puritans did arrive on the Mayflower and establish a colony in New England, they were not the first English settlers in the Americas. A decade earlier, English prospectors associated with the Virginia Company had founded the first permanent English settlement in the New World, called Jamestown.
