Virtual Reality Storytelling Rises above Prison Walls with Catalina Alarcón

Catalina Alarcón is the director of Going Back Home: Mother VR. A moving VR workshop and experience made together with people in prison. Her work reunites Chilean men and women with their families via VR. Chilean women in prison face severe restrictions on communication with their families—no visits, not even conversations through glass. Many mothers endure years of separation from their children, who remain at home. This meaningful project was part of the IDFA Doc Lab, 2023. In this episode Zena and Catalina speak about the project, being part of IDFA, working with VR and how VR can change people’s lives by bringing divided communities back together.
