Visitation at Parish Prison

Season 2, Episode 4 — VisitationWhile I was housed on L2 at East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, I was close enough to home that friends and family could visit regularly.In this episode, I break down what visitation actually looked like: the locked metal booths, the old handset phones, the tiny diamond-shaped window of plate glass, and the fifteen-minute limits. Protective custody inmates weren’t supposed to be placed in that environment — but lazy policies and lazy guards meant we often were, locked in with men from other units where violence and sexual politics could erupt at any moment.Visitation is supposed to be a lifeline. In parish prison, it was just another place where scarcity, risk, and survival rules still applied.
